2024 Hike recap
This year, the event surpassed expectations as Olds saw an impressive turnout of roughly 125-130 participants, while Didsbury welcomed 25 eager supporters.
The spirit of generosity shone brightly this year, especially with Mr. Mikes stepping up, pledging $1 from every Mike's burger sold throughout May to the Hike for Hospice cause. With additional donations trickling in, the total amount raised is projected to reach close to $40,000. This surge of support is particularly uplifting as it comes at a crucial time when programs and services in Mountain View County are expanding to meet the growing needs of the community.
A key highlight of the event was the outstanding fundraising efforts of individuals and teams. Sally Gason led the pack, raising over $6,700 individually, while teams like Jim Stone & Friends and Team Donna collectively raised over $5,000 each. The community rallied together, exemplifying the true essence of compassion and solidarity.
The event wouldn't have been possible without the invaluable support of sponsors like Prime Pharmacy, Buster's Pizza, Olds Community Pharmacy, Shoppers Drug Mart, Mr. Mikes, and Connect First. Their contributions played a pivotal role in the success of the event.
Adding a touch of fun to the proceedings, participants donned their best superhero costumes, vying for the coveted titles of best-dressed individual and team. With anticipation building, we eagerly await the judgment based on the snapshots captured by Veronica Reist.
The atmosphere was electric as the Mountain View Colts in Didsbury and the Grizzlys in Olds led the warm-up sessions. Mayors Rhonda Hunter and Judy Dahl, along with other esteemed guests, lent their support, further emphasizing the significance of the cause. Special recognition goes to Harvey and Pansy Angevine for their heartfelt words of encouragement.
The event culminated in heartwarming moments as Sally bravely shaved her head, symbolizing solidarity and support. The presence of Jeff Meceir, a retired RCMP officer turned barber, underscored the community's unwavering support for one another.
Behind the scenes, over 30 dedicated hospice society volunteers worked tirelessly to ensure the event's smooth execution. Their selfless dedication is a testament to the strength of community spirit.
Post-hike, participants were treated to delicious meals courtesy of Daphne's Market in Didsbury and Buster's Pizza in Olds, further fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose.
In reflection, the Hike for Hospice 2024 was undeniably a resounding success, surpassing all expectations and leaving a lasting impact on the community. As we celebrate this achievement, our focus now shifts to our upcoming First-ever Golf Classic on June 13, 2024. With our programs and services expanding, the need for continued fundraising efforts has never been more crucial. Together, we will continue to support and uplift those in need, one step at a time.
